USA Martial Arts is part of an international martial arts family that can trace its roots to
O Sensei Morihei Ueshiba who founded Aikido in 1942.
Howell Tapley, head instructor, began formal study of Aikido in 1999. Sensei Tapley is a member of the USA Aikido Association and the Chudokai Aikido Federation. These direct associations allow students and instructors of USA Martial Arts to have both national and international certification. Sensei Tapley trains under his immediate Aikido instructor, Shihan Van Bushnell, Southeast Regional Director for USA Martial Arts located in Birmingham, Alabama. Sensei Tapley also trains each year with Shihan Roger Jarrett, Director of the USA Aikido Association, and Shihan Kevin Blok, Founder and Director of the Chudokai Aikido Federation which was formed under the direction of Soke Gozo Shioda and Shihan Hitoshi Nakano to promote the development of Yoshinkan Aikido in North America.

Aikido is a very traditional Japanese martial art that stresses harmony of the mind and body. It incorporates joint locking and nerve control techniques together with dynamic throwing techniques to dominate and subdue an opponent. Using timing and and balance, a smaller individual can defend him/herself against a larger, more powerful person. All skill levels are welcome and we practice in a friendly manner with a focus on client safety and personal self-development.
